Beneficial State Bank was founded in 2007 by Kat Taylor and Tom Steyer. The bank was created as a mission-driven community development financial institution focused on social justice, environmental sustainability, and equitable banking. According to the bank’s official history, Taylor and Steyer designed the institution around a “triple bottom line” approach emphasizing: ● People ● Planet ● Long-term financial sustainability A distinctive feature of the bank is that much of its ownership structure is tied to nonprofit entities through the Beneficial State Foundation, rather than traditional private shareholders.
