The Mayor and Police Commission Selection Panel have made appointments to the Police Commission as follows:

1. Mubarak Ahmad (Selection Panel appointment)
2. José Dorado (Selection Panel appointment)
3. Ginale Harris (Selection Panel appointment)
4. Regina Jackson (Mayoral appointment)
5. Edwin Prather (Mayoral appointment)
6. Mike Nisperos (Selection Panel appointment)
7. Thomas Smith (Mayoral appointment)

Two individuals were appointed as alternates to the commission:
1. Maureen Benson (Selection Panel appointment)
2. Andrea Dooley (Mayoral appointment)

The application deadline to serve on the Police Commission to oversee the Oakland Police Department was June 30, 2017. The Selection Panel received 144 applications before the June 30 deadline. Read the list of all 144 applicants and each application.

​Background Information

​On November 8, 2016, Oakland voters approved Measure LL with 83.19% (137,032 votes) in favor of the measure. Measure LL establishes:
 

• A Police Commission to oversee the Police Department’s policies and procedures, and
• A Community Police Review Agency to investigate police misconduct and recommend discipline.

​Enabling Legislation

The City Council can approve policy that furthers the goals of Measure LL. At the City Council meeting on July 18, 2017, the Council provided direction to the City Administrator regarding a draft ordinance that (1) enables implementation of the City Charter amendment creating the Oakland Police Commission and the Community Police Review Agency, (2) establishes a civilian Inspector General, and (3) requires an annual report and presentation by the Community Policing Advisory Board to the Police Commission. The draft ordinance will return to the Council for discussion at a future date to be determined. ​
